Triage System in Emergency Departments: Color-Coding & Priority

Triage is the process of sorting patients based on the severity of their condition to optimize the allocation of emergency resources.

Triage Tag Classifications

  • Red (Immediate/Emergent): Life-threatening injuries requiring immediate intervention (e.g., airway obstruction, shock, tension pneumothorax).
  • Yellow (Delayed/Urgent): Stable but serious conditions requiring care within 30-120 minutes (e.g., open fractures, stable chest pain).
  • Green (Minimal/Non-urgent): 'Walking wounded' with minor injuries (e.g., abrasions, sprains).
  • Black (Expectant): Deceased or unsalvageable injuries where resuscitation attempts are futile.
