Priority Nursing Questions: Differentiating 'First Action' vs 'Best Action'

Clinical reasoning questions often present multiple options that are all correct actions. The challenge lies in determining the priority order.

Strategic Frameworks

  • ABC Framework: Airway always takes priority, followed by Breathing, and then Circulation.
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Physiological needs (oxygen, fluids, nutrition) must be addressed before safety or psychosocial needs.
  • Nursing Process: Assessment (gathering data) is always performed before planning or implementing an intervention.

Exception Rule: In cardiopulmonary arrest (unresponsive, pulseless), the sequence changes to CAB (Circulation/Compressions first).
