NCLEX-RN Exam Prep: Differentiating Type 1 vs Type 2 Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity reactions are immune responses that cause tissue damage. Differentiating types is a frequent test focus.

Key Immune Reactions

  • Type 1 (Immediate): IgE-mediated. Antigens bind to mast cells, releasing histamine. Examples: Anaphylaxis, allergic asthma.
  • Type 2 (Cytotoxic): IgG/IgM-mediated. Antibodies attack cell surface antigens. Example: ABO incompatibility reaction.
