Infection Control: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Donning & Doffing

PPE provides a barrier to protect healthcare workers from infectious hazards. Using the incorrect order during removal is a common cause of self-contamination.

Donning Sequence (Putting On)

  • 1. Gown: Fully cover torso from neck to knees.
  • 2. Mask or Respirator: Secure ties or elastic bands.
  • 3. Goggles or Face Shield: Place over face and eyes.
  • 4. Gloves: Extend to cover wrist of isolation gown.

Doffing Sequence (Taking Off)

  • 1. Gloves: Peel off gently to avoid aerosolizing pathogens.
  • 2. Goggles or Face Shield: Remove from the back by lifting ear bands.
  • 3. Gown: Unfasten ties, peel gown down from shoulders.
  • 4. Mask or Respirator: Untie or remove strap without touching front surface.
  • 5. Perform Hand Hygiene immediately.
