Correct patient positioning promotes comfort, facilitates breathing, prevents pressure injuries, and is crucial during recovery from specific surgeries.
High-Yield Positions & Indications
- Semi-Fowler's (30-45°): Promotes chest expansion; used for dyspnea, enteral feeds, and post-thyroidectomy (reduces neck tension).
- High-Fowler's (90°): Used during nasogastric tube insertion, feeding, and severe respiratory distress.
- Trendelenburg (Head lower than feet): Used for severe hypotension/shock, cord prolapse, and facilitating venous return.
- Reverse Trendelenburg (Feet lower than head): Promotes gastric emptying, prevents reflux, and is used for patients with elevated intracranial pressure.
- Sim's (Semi-prone, left side with right knee flexed): Used for administering enemas, rectal suppositories, and rectal examinations.
Post-Op Tip: Post-Lumbar puncture, keep the patient flat (supine) for 4 to 12 hours to prevent post-dural puncture headaches.
