Anatomy & Physiology: Respiratory Zones & Gas Exchange

The respiratory system is divided into conducting and respiratory zones to warm, filter, and exchange gases.

Zones & Membrane Transport

  • Conducting Zone: Nose to terminal bronchioles. Passages that filter and humidify air without performing gas exchange.
  • Respiratory Zone: Respiratory bronchioles to alveoli. Actual site of gas exchange via passive diffusion across the respiratory membrane.
