Pediatric Emergencies: Assessing and Managing Epiglottitis

Epiglottitis is an acute, life-threatening bacterial infection of the epiglottis, most commonly caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib).

The Four D's

  • Drooling: Due to inability to swallow.
  • Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing.
  • Dysphonia: Muffled voice ('hot potato' voice).
  • Distress: Inspiratory stridor and retractions.

CRITICAL PRECAUTION: Do not inspect the throat with a tongue depressor or swab unless prepared for immediate intubation, as this can trigger laryngospasm and complete airway obstruction.
